One theory is that hearing loss may lead to social isolation, cognitive decline, and a reduced ability to engage in mentally stimulating activities, all of which are risk factors for dementia. However, studies have also found that using hearing aids to treat hearing loss can help reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.
